About a week ago, Samsung took the wraps off its first smartphone with a dual-camera setup, the Note 8. In the future, we expect to see many more devices from the tech giant with two rear cameras, including the high-end Galaxy S9.
However, what’s interesting is that according to a report by Etnews, Samsung also plans to expand the use of dual cameras to its mid-range lineup of smartphones. The report claims that the company is already preparing the first one, which will be released sometime in the fourth quarter of the year. Although Etnews doesn’t specify the name of the smartphone, we think that this might be the Galaxy J7 Plus that leaked online less than a week ago.
According to leaked press materials, the smartphone might sport a 13 MP sensor with an f/1.7 aperture along with a 5 MP sensor with an f/1.9 aperture on the back. It should also come with the “Live Focus” portrait feature introduced with the Galaxy Note 8, which utilizes both lenses to make subjects stand out from their backgrounds. However, the report claims that the cameras won’t have optical image stabilization.
Other rumored specs include a 5.5-inch 1080p display, a 2.4 GHz octa-core processor, 4 GB of RAM, and 32 GB of internal storage. The J7 Plus is also said to run Android 7.1.1 Nougat with Samsung Bixby support.
This will be the first Samsung mid-range smartphone to sport a dual-camera setup, with more to come in the near future. With the technology becoming increasingly in demand, the company might also bring dual cameras to its popular Galaxy A series next year, although this hasn’t been confirmed yet.
Dual-camera setups are quickly becoming the new norm in the smartphone market, which is why a market research company called Techno System Research (TSR) predicts that 37.2 percent of smartphones sold in 2021 (1.775 billion) will feature two camera sensors on the back. An industry insider speaking to Etnews has an even bolder prediction, claiming the percentage of dual-camera smartphones will reach 30 percent in 2018.
This may or may not be true, but what’s for sure is that we’ll see more and more mid-range smartphones with dual cameras released in the near future, not only from Samsung but from other big manufacturers as well. These might not be quite as high-end as the ones found on flagships like the Note 8, but will still be able to produce some great looking images with that fancy bokeh effect.
